With the PhotoID Studio desktop app you can create a custom photo size for any document used in any country, save it as a preset, and reuse your saved preset with a single click.

Always verify the size before an official application

The information here reflects the sizes commonly accepted for visa applications. Authorities can change photo requirements without prior notice, and different documents in the same country (passport, ID card, driving licence, residence permit) may require different sizes. Check the current guidance of the authority you are applying to before preparing your photo.

How should a Ukraine visa photo look?

The Ukrainian passport photo uses the 35×45 mm white-background format; head 32-36 mm with the face filling 70-80% of the frame. An unusual detail: since 2007, every Ukrainian biometric passport prints the photo onto the data page in black-and-white via laser engraving. The studio submits a colour frame, but the final print is monochrome. Citizens usually have the photo captured live at the DMS office during the appointment.

The body that sets the spec

The standard is published by the State Migration Service (DMSU, dmsu.gov.ua). The 35×45 mm format applies to passport, ID card and residency applications; the frame must be no older than six months. Because biometric eye visibility is critical, glasses must be removed even when prescription.

Workflow after the shoot

Send the frame to PhotoID Studio and select the Ukraine 35×45 mm preset; the app aligns the face, locks head height into the 32-36 mm range and keeps the face proportion at 70-80%. A colour JPEG is exported; mid-tones are kept smooth so that laser engraving on the data page preserves contrast.

Capture setup and direction

Seat the customer 1.5-2 m in front of the white backdrop with shoulders parallel to the camera. Camera on a tripod, lens at eye level. Standard setup: a 50-85 mm portrait lens, f/8 aperture, a softbox at 45° with a reflector on the opposite side. Cue: "chin level, no glasses, mouth closed, neutral expression". Avoid heavy fill light so mid-tones survive the laser engraving on the data page.

Reasons the DMS rejects frames

• Frame older than 6 months; outside the recency rule. • Head height outside 32-36 mm or face filling less than 70-80% of the frame. • A non-white backdrop; grey or coloured background. • Glasses worn (including prescription); biometric eye visibility blocked. • A smile, visible teeth or a closed eye. • Hair or shadow obscuring facial features. • Low contrast; image illegible after laser engraving.

For studios in Kyiv, Lviv and Odesa

In Ukraine, thousands of biometric passport, ID card and international visa applications produce constant studio traffic, and EU integration is increasing Schengen visa demand. The PhotoID Studio Ukraine preset locks the 35×45 mm format and the 70-80% face proportion automatically; switching to Schengen, UK or US format from the same frame is a single click.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the biometric passport photo appear black-and-white?

Since 2007, Ukraine has printed the photo onto the biometric passport data page in black-and-white via laser engraving. The colour studio frame is converted by the system at print time.

Is the photo captured live at the DMS for citizens?

Usually yes. For passport and ID applications the photo is taken at the DMS office during the appointment; backup frames or visa applications still accept studio prints.

Can the photo be taken with prescription glasses?

No. Because biometric eye visibility is required, glasses must be removed even if prescription.
