Always verify the size before an official application

The information here reflects the sizes commonly accepted for visa applications. Authorities can change photo requirements without prior notice, and different documents in the same country (passport, ID card, driving licence, residence permit) may require different sizes. Check the current guidance of the authority you are applying to before preparing your photo.

How should a South Africa visa photo look?

South Africa uses the 35×45 mm format with a chin-to-hair-top height of 34.5 mm and 3 mm above the hair. The DHA explicitly accepts black-and-white photos alongside colour and permits white, light grey or plain cream backgrounds. The recency rule is very strict: just 1 month. Two photos are required for the passport.

The body that sets the spec

The standard is published by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA, dha.gov.za). The same 35×45 mm format applies to passport, Smart ID and driving licence applications; the frame must be no older than one month. Prescription glasses are accepted if there is no glare; sunglasses are strictly banned.

Workflow after the shoot

Send the frame to PhotoID Studio and select the South Africa 35×45 mm preset; the app aligns the face, locks head height at 34.5 mm and keeps a 3 mm gap above the hair. For a passport application, a pure white backdrop and colour output are preferred. For a Smart ID or driving licence the DHA also accepts black-and-white output on light grey or cream, so the studio picks the backdrop and colour profile based on the document the customer is applying for.

Capture setup and direction

Seat the customer 1.5-2 m in front of the chosen backdrop (white, light grey or cream) with shoulders parallel to the camera. Camera on a tripod, lens at eye level. Standard setup: a 50-85 mm portrait lens, f/8 aperture, a softbox at 45° with a reflector on the opposite side. Cue: "chin level, glasses off if possible, mouth closed, neutral expression". For a black-and-white output, keep contrast slightly softer.

Reasons the DHA rejects frames

• Frame older than 1 month; outside the recency rule. • Head height deviating from 34.5 mm; less than 3 mm above the hair. • A backdrop other than white, light grey or cream; patterned background. • Glare on prescription lenses; sunglasses worn. • A smile, visible teeth or a closed eye. • Hair or jewellery covering the facial outline. • Excessive compression; low resolution.

For studios in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban

In South Africa, Smart ID, passport, driver licence and international visa applications produce steady year-round demand. The PhotoID Studio South Africa preset locks 34.5 mm head height, 3 mm hair gap and an optional black-and-white conversion in a single pass; switching to UK, Schengen or EU format from the same frame is a single click.

Frequently asked questions

Does the DHA accept black-and-white photos?

Yes. South Africa is rare globally in explicitly accepting black-and-white alongside colour. Either is valid as long as skin detail is preserved.

Which backdrop colours are valid?

White, light grey and plain cream: three options. This is a tolerance band rarely seen in passport specifications; patterned backdrops are still rejected.

Can the photo be taken with prescription glasses?

Yes, provided there is no glare on the lenses. Sunglasses or tinted lenses are never accepted.
