How should a Malaysia passport photo look?
Malaysia works with two unusual rules for passport photos: the size is 35×50 mm (different from the Asian-common 35×45) and citizen photos are taken at the JIM counter via Facial Live Capture: the applicant does not bring a studio frame. Foreigners (visa/EMGS student pass) submit their own 35×50 mm prints. Dress rules are strict: dark-collared clothing, no earrings, no nose piercings, dark-coloured headscarf.

Requirements & Notes
Malaysian passport photo is 35×50 mm. White background required.
The body that sets the spec
The standard is published by Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia (JIM). Citizen passport photos are captured at the JIM office via Facial Live Capture; no photo is brought from outside. Foreigner visa and EMGS student pass applications take a 35×50 mm white-background print. Validity is six months, with digital uploads at 413×591 px @ 300 DPI.
Workflow after the shoot
For foreigner visa applications the frame goes to PhotoID Studio and the Malaysia preset is selected; the app aligns the face, cleans the background to pure white, checks the dark-collar requirement and exports 35×50 mm at 300 DPI. Switching to a Schengen or China format from the same frame is a one-click move. For citizens, no studio photo is required; studios route this service to foreigner/student flow.
Capture setup and direction
For foreigner / student flow seat the customer 1.5-2 m in front of the white backdrop with shoulders parallel to the camera. Camera on a tripod, lens at eye level. Standard setup: a 50-85 mm portrait lens, f/8 aperture, a softbox at 45° with a reflector on the opposite side. Customers wear dark-collared clothing; earrings and nose piercings are removed; the headscarf is dark. The same dress rules apply at the JIM counter for citizens.
Reasons for rejection at JIM
• Wrong size: a 35×45 mm print is rejected for Malaysia; only 35×50 mm is valid. • Non-white backdrop or visible shadow. • Glasses (live capture means no glasses are worn). • Light-coloured collar or clothing that blends with the backdrop. • Earrings, nose piercings or jewellery casting shadow on the face. • A light-coloured headscarf; headscarves must be dark. • A foreigner frame older than six months from the capture date.
For studios in Malaysia
Because citizen passport photos are taken at the JIM counter, studios concentrate on foreigner visa, EMGS student pass, and school/work IDs. The PhotoID Studio Malaysia preset locks the 35×50 mm white background; switching to a Schengen or China format from the same frame is a one-click move.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I bring a studio photo for a Malaysian passport?
No for citizens. JIM uses Facial Live Capture at the counter. For foreigner visa / EMGS, you bring a 35×50 mm studio print.
- Why 35×50 mm instead of 35×45?
Malaysia sets its own spec at 35×50 mm. The Asian-common 35×45 mm print is rejected by JIM.
- Are the dress rules really that strict?
Yes. JIM requires dark-collared clothing, no earrings or piercings, and a dark-coloured headscarf. The rules apply at the counter during live capture.
