Always verify the size before an official application

The information here reflects the sizes commonly accepted for visa applications. Authorities can change photo requirements without prior notice, and different documents in the same country (passport, ID card, driving licence, residence permit) may require different sizes. Check the current guidance of the authority you are applying to before preparing your photo.

How should a Ireland visa photo look?

Ireland uses a print range of 35-45 mm wide × 38-50 mm high; the face fills 70-80% of the frame. Over 90% of passport applications go through Passport Online, where the customer uploads a digital photo from a smartphone (minimum 715×951 px JPEG, built-in rotation tool). Ireland is in the EU but not in Schengen.

The bodies that set the spec

The standard is published by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). The photo must be uploaded within six months of the capture date. The same spec applies to Irish citizens and foreign visa applicants; glasses are accepted only with no glare and frames not crossing the eyes.

Workflow after the shoot

Open the frame in PhotoID Studio and pick the Éire/Ireland preset; the app aligns the face, normalises the backdrop to a light tone and exports a print file in the 35-45 × 38-50 mm range alongside an upload-ready JPEG (minimum 715×951 px) for Passport Online.

Capture setup and direction

Seat the customer 1.5-2 m in front of a light backdrop with shoulders parallel to the camera. Camera on a tripod, lens at eye level. Standard setup: a 50-85 mm portrait lens, f/8, a softbox at 45° with a reflector opposite. High resolution is essential: Passport Online demands at least 715×951 px. Cue: "chin slightly back, mouth closed, eyes fully open, neutral expression".

What Passport Online rejects

• Resolution under the minimum 715×951 px. • Backdrop other than white, light grey or cream. • Face under 70-80% of the frame. • A frame older than six months from the capture date. • Glasses glare; frame cutting across the eyes. • A smile, visible teeth, an open mouth. • Hair covering the eyes.

Why is the size a range?

The DFA accepts a print between 35-45 mm wide × 38-50 mm high, with the face filling 70-80% of the frame.
