Always verify the size before an official application

The information here reflects the sizes commonly accepted for visa applications. Authorities can change photo requirements without prior notice, and different documents in the same country (passport, ID card, driving licence, residence permit) may require different sizes. Check the current guidance of the authority you are applying to before preparing your photo.

How should a Iceland visa photo look?

Iceland uses the 35×45 mm Schengen format with head height 31-36 mm; backdrop is white or plain light, and Iceland is one of the few Schengen states that explicitly accepts a white backdrop. Passport and ID applications are filed at sýslumenn (district magistrate) offices, where the biometric photo and fingerprints are captured on site during the appointment. Iceland is part of Schengen but not the EU.

The bodies that set the spec

The standard is published by Þjóðskrá Íslands (Registers Iceland) and the sýslumenn. For abroad print submissions the photo must be within six months of the capture date. Glasses come off unless a medical reason is documented.

Workflow after the shoot

For abroad or fallback work, open the frame in PhotoID Studio and pick the Ísland preset; the app aligns the face, normalises the backdrop to white or a plain light tone and exports 35×45 mm at 300 DPI. The same frame is reusable for a Schengen visa application.

Capture setup and direction

For abroad/fallback work, seat the customer 1.5-2 m in front of a white or plain light backdrop with shoulders parallel to the camera. Camera on a tripod, lens at eye level. Standard setup: a 50-85 mm portrait lens, f/8, a softbox at 45° with a reflector opposite. Cue: "chin slightly back, mouth closed, eyes fully open, neutral expression"; glasses come off unless a medical reason is documented.

Where sýslumenn and consulates send people back

• A backdrop other than light (blue, dark grey, patterned). • A frame older than six months from the capture date. • Glasses worn without a medical certificate. • Hair covering the eyes or the forehead line. • A smile, visible teeth, an open mouth. • Head too small in the frame; the ICAO ratio is missed. • A print outside the 35×45 mm spec.

sýslumenn fallback and Schengen visa

Even though sýslumenn capture passport biometrics on site, Schengen visas and fallback prints keep traffic steady in Icelandic studios. The PhotoID Studio Ísland preset locks the 35×45 mm white-or-light frame and switching to a Schengen visa layout from the same shot is one click.

Frequently asked questions

Does Iceland accept a white backdrop?

Yes. Unlike most Schengen practice, Iceland explicitly accepts a white backdrop; plain light tones are also valid.

Do I need to bring a studio print for the passport?

No. Biometrics are captured at the sýslumenn appointment; abroad submissions still take a 35×45 mm print.

Is Iceland in the EU?

No. Iceland is a Schengen member but not in the EU; the passport spec still follows the Schengen template.
