With the PhotoID Studio desktop app you can create a custom photo size for any document used in any country, save it as a preset, and reuse your saved preset with a single click.

Always verify the size before an official application

The information here reflects the sizes commonly accepted for visa applications. Authorities can change photo requirements without prior notice, and different documents in the same country (passport, ID card, driving licence, residence permit) may require different sizes. Check the current guidance of the authority you are applying to before preparing your photo.

How should a Sri Lanka visa photo look?

Sri Lanka requires a light blue background for passport and National Identity Card (NIC) photos, unlike most countries that require white. This country-specific requirement is one of the most common causes of rejection for applicants who submit a white-background photo. The photo must be submitted within six months of the capture date.

The bodies that set the spec

Passport applications are managed by the Department of Immigration and Emigration. NIC applications are processed by the Registrar General's Department. Both agencies mandate a light blue background for all submitted photos.

Workflow after the shoot

The frame is loaded into PhotoID Studio and the Sri Lanka preset is selected; the app aligns the face, replaces the background with the correct light blue tone and exports 35×45 mm at 300 DPI. The background colour is set automatically; pure white or dark tones are not accepted.

Capture setup and direction

For Sri Lanka applications, use a light blue backdrop directly, or shoot against a white or grey background and replace it with the correct light blue tone in post. Seat the customer 1.5-2 m in front of the backdrop with shoulders parallel to the camera. Cue: "chin slightly back, mouth closed, eyes fully open, neutral expression". Religious head coverings are accepted as long as the face is not obscured.

Reasons for rejection at the passport office and Registrar General

• A white or any other non-light-blue background: Sri Lanka mandates a light blue backdrop; this is the most common rejection cause. • A photo older than six months from the capture date. • A smile, visible teeth or an open mouth. • Glasses glare or tinted lenses. • Head too small in the frame or poorly aligned. • Dark or saturated blue: the background must be light blue; dark blue is not accepted.

For studios in Colombo and other cities

Studios in Colombo handle steady passport and NIC renewal demand throughout the year. Sri Lanka's unique light blue background requirement is handled automatically by the PhotoID Studio preset, with no additional colour correction needed.

Frequently asked questions

What background colour is required for a Sri Lanka passport photo?

Light blue. This is a Sri Lanka-specific requirement; photos with a white background will be rejected.

Can the same photo be used for the passport and the NIC?

Yes. Both documents use the 35×45 mm light blue background standard, so a single print covers both.

How long is the photo valid?

The photo must be submitted within six months of the capture date.
